WhatsApp Testing New ‘After Reading’ Feature for View Once Messages: Here’s How It Works

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a major privacy-focused upgrade for its disappearing messages feature. The platform is now testing a new option called “After Reading,” which could make temporary chats even more secure and user-friendly.

The upcoming feature changes the way disappearing messages currently work on WhatsApp. Instead of the timer starting immediately after a message is sent, the countdown will reportedly begin only after the recipient actually opens and reads the message.

This update is expected to give users greater control over private conversations and sensitive information shared through chats.

What Is WhatsApp’s New “After Reading” Feature?

At present, WhatsApp’s disappearing messages system starts counting down the deletion timer as soon as a message is delivered or sent.

However, with the upcoming “After Reading” feature, the timer will only activate once the recipient opens and reads the message.

This means:

  • Unread messages will not immediately begin expiring
  • Messages stay available until opened
  • Auto-deletion begins only after viewing

The feature is designed to make temporary messaging more practical, especially for users who may not open chats immediately.

iPhone Beta Users Reportedly Getting Early Access

According to reports, the feature is currently available only to a limited number of iPhone beta testers using Apple’s TestFlight program.

Some regular App Store users may also gradually begin seeing the feature during testing phases.

The option is reportedly appearing under WhatsApp’s existing “Disappearing Messages” settings section with the label:

  • “After Reading”

This indicates that WhatsApp plans to integrate the feature directly into its current disappearing message system rather than launching it separately.

Expected Timer Options for Users

Reports suggest users may receive multiple timing options once the feature becomes available.

The expected post-reading deletion options include:

  • 5 minutes
  • 1 hour
  • 12 hours

Once the recipient reads the message, the selected timer will begin counting down automatically.

Additionally, WhatsApp may automatically delete messages that remain unread for 24 hours to prevent old unread disappearing messages from remaining permanently inside chats.

Existing Disappearing Message Feature Will Continue

The new “After Reading” option is expected to work alongside WhatsApp’s current disappearing message system.

Currently, WhatsApp allows users to set disappearing message durations such as:

  • 24 hours
  • 7 days
  • 90 days

These settings can already be applied:

  • To individual chats
  • As default settings for all new conversations

The new feature will reportedly act as an optional additional privacy layer rather than replacing existing disappearing message controls.

Feature Will Likely Remain Optional

One important detail is that the new system is expected to remain completely optional.

Users will reportedly need to manually enable the “After Reading” setting for chats where they want messages to disappear after being read.

Chats without this feature enabled will continue operating under WhatsApp’s existing disappearing message rules.

This gives users flexibility to choose between:

  • Traditional disappearing chats
  • Read-based disappearing chats
  • Regular permanent conversations

depending on their privacy needs.

Why WhatsApp Is Focusing More on Privacy

Privacy-focused messaging features are becoming increasingly important as users share more:

  • Personal conversations
  • Financial details
  • Work-related information
  • Sensitive media
  • Temporary updates

Messaging platforms worldwide are now competing heavily on privacy and security features.

WhatsApp has already introduced several tools aimed at improving user privacy, including:

  • View Once media
  • Chat lock
  • End-to-end encryption
  • Screenshot blocking for View Once content
  • Secret code protection

The “After Reading” feature appears to be another step in strengthening temporary communication controls.

Feature Still Under Testing

As of now, WhatsApp has not officially announced a global rollout date for the feature.

Since it remains under beta testing, the final version could still change before public release.

However, early reports suggest WhatsApp is actively exploring new ways to make disappearing chats more intelligent, flexible, and privacy-focused for its billions of users worldwide.
