Salman Khurshid's reaction on the crisis in Nepal
Congress Foreign Affairs Chairman and former Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid expressed condolences on behalf of the party and the nation for the devastating floods in Nepal on Wednesday (August 26). He also issued an official statement in this regard on Saturday (August 29, 2026).
The statement said, "On behalf of the people of India, the Indian National Congress (INC) expresses its deepest condolences to the people of Nepal. We stand in complete solidarity with the people of Nepal. The devastating floods in Nepal have claimed hundreds of lives and caused severe economic and humanitarian damage to the country."
He said, 'Our condolences are with all those who are still waiting for news of the safety of their loved ones.'

Congress leader Salman Khurshid said in an official statement, "India and Nepal share a civilisational heritage that predates the emergence of modern nations and states. This is based on shared faith, culture and Himalayan ecology, which has connected the people of our two countries for centuries."

Referring to India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, he said, "Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru played a key role in formalizing the relationship between India and Nepal through the Treaty of Peace and Friendship (1950). He envisioned a relationship defined by openness and mutual cooperation."
He further said, "The people of India stand ready to provide all possible assistance to the people of Nepal. We will stand firmly with Nepal as a trusted partner as it overcomes this crisis."
