Stable prices from May 2022 onwards

Despite fluctuations in global crude oil markets, petrol and diesel prices in India have remained largely stable over the past few years. Petrol and diesel prices in India have not seen any significant changes since May 2022. Prices remained stable for a long time after the central government reduced excise duty (by ₹8 on petrol and ₹6 on diesel) during that period.

Retail fuel prices are influenced by several factors, including global crude oil prices, the rupee-dollar exchange rate, central and state taxes, transportation costs, and the demand-supply equation. Since India imports a large portion of its crude oil, any fluctuations in global prices or currency exchange rates can impact domestic fuel rates.
