YouTube AI Feature: In a major step, video platform YouTube has expanded its likeness detection technology to the entertainment industry. The aim is to identify AI-generated fake videos, especially deepfakes, and protect the identities of celebrities.

What is this Likeness Detection technology?

This technology uses AI to scan videos for fake faces. Simply put, this system can detect if a celebrity's face has been misused. This system is somewhat similar to YouTube's old Content ID system, which identifies copyrighted content. The only difference is that it now monitors faces and identities.

Why is this feature important?

Nowadays, many fake advertisements and scams use celebrities' faces. Using their identities without permission has become a major problem. This new technology aims to curb such incidents so that no one can exploit a celebrity's image.

Who will benefit?

This feature was initially tested with a limited number of creators, but is now being expanded to include talent agencies, management companies, and their associated artists. Interestingly, celebrities don't need to have their own YouTube channel to use it.

What options will users have?

If someone's identity is found to be fake in a video, the person or organization concerned will have several options.

  • Requesting the removal of a video
  • Making a Copyright Claim
  • or take no action

However, YouTube has clarified that not every video will be removed, as content like parody and satire is allowed on the platform.

What will change next?

Currently, this technology only works on visual (face) recognition, but in the future, voice (audio) recognition capabilities will also be added. YouTube is also working to make this protection part of the law. The company is supporting the NO FAKES Act in the US, which aims to control the misuse of someone's voice and identity through AI.
