That is why a slow Wi-Fi connection can quickly become frustrating. Videos may keep buffering, webpages can take longer to load, and devices may repeatedly lose connection.

However, slow Wi-Fi does not always mean that your router has reached the end of its life. In many situations, changing a few network settings, improving the router’s placement and connecting devices to the appropriate Wi-Fi band can make a noticeable difference.

Before spending money on a new router, try these practical steps to improve your wireless network.

1. Choose the Right Wi-Fi Band for Each Device

Modern routers commonly support multiple wireless bands, including 2.4GHz, 5GHz and, on compatible equipment, 6GHz. Each band has different characteristics, so using the same band for every device may not always deliver the best experience.

The 2.4GHz band generally offers better coverage and can travel through walls more effectively. It can be useful for devices that are located farther from the router or do not require high bandwidth.

The 5GHz band can provide higher speeds over shorter distances and is often better suited to devices located relatively close to the router.

If both the router and device support 6GHz, it can offer access to a less congested band in suitable environments. However, its coverage can be more limited, particularly through walls.

The best choice therefore depends on the device, distance from the router and amount of bandwidth required.

2. Keep Low-Bandwidth Devices on 2.4GHz
