ED gets major success in drug smuggling case.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has achieved a major success in a money laundering case related to drug trafficking. The Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Special Court in Mohali convicted Dara Singh and Gurdarshan Singh of money laundering and sentenced them to three years of rigorous imprisonment.
The PMLA Special Court in Mohali imposed a fine of ₹5,000 each on both. According to the central investigating agency, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the case stemmed from a drug trafficking case involving the seizure of 1,230 kg of cocaine. The Punjab Police registered an FIR under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).
The ED recovered two checks for ₹6 lakh and ₹4 lakh.
Both accused were subsequently convicted under relevant sections of the NDPS Act. During the investigation, the ED recovered two checks for ₹6 lakh and ₹4 lakh. The total amount of both cheques was ₹10 lakh and was found to be linked to drug trafficking activities.
Both were found guilty of money laundering.
During the hearing, the PMLA Special Court held that the recovered drugs and these two cheques fall under the category of 'property' and 'proceeds of crime' under the PMLA. On this basis, both were found guilty of the crime of money laundering. The ED has said that the purpose of this action is not only to take action against drug smugglers, but also to eliminate the income generated from the drug trade and its financial network.
Earlier, the Punjab Police's Anti-Gangster Task Force and the Mohali Police arrested two major drug traffickers, Jaskaran and Lakhwinder, after a shootout in Mohali's Industrial Area. On Tuesday, police bulldozed an illegal construction owned by a drug trafficker in Barmajra, Mohali.
