This app-based work has opened up avenues for income, but it has also raised significant questions about safety and health on the job.

A new survey has revealed that 62.2 percent of platform workers lack health insurance. This means that nearly six out of ten workers lack insurance to cover medical expenses if they become ill or need medical treatment.

How many workers were interviewed for the survey?
The survey was conducted by Janaphal. It included 1,000 platform workers across 10 cities in the country. The survey gathered information from those working on delivery, cab, and other apps about their working conditions, health, and safety.

The report states that apart from working continuously, these workers also have to face risks like road accidents, bad weather, and constant work pressure.

Who is responsible if an accident happens?

Along with the lack of health insurance, the situation regarding accident insurance is also poor. According to the survey, 44.2 percent of platform workers did not have accident insurance. This means that if an accident occurs while working on the road, workers do not even have the security of financial assistance.

More than 80 percent of workers who have filed accident insurance claims described the claims process as extremely difficult. This means that even with insurance coverage, accessing it when needed is not easy for every worker.

Long working hours

For gig workers, earnings and working hours are inextricably linked. Working longer hours often means higher earnings. However, being on the road for longer periods also increases fatigue and the risk of accidents.

Jobs like delivery and cab driving also involve pressure to be on time. Weather, traffic, and road conditions pose risks to workers.
