BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia stated that no decision was made regarding Agarkar's tenure at Thursday's meeting. Qualifications of Chief Selector
Qualifications to become the Chairman of the Selection Committee of BCCI i.e. Chief Selector:
- At least 5 years have passed since retirement from all formats of cricket.
- Experience of at least 7 Test matches
- Applicants must have played at least 10 ODIs and 20 first-class matches, or have experience in 30 first-class matches.
- The applicant should not have been a member of any committee of BCCI for a total period of 5 years.
In history, 10 people have held the position of Chief Selector of Team India. Before Agarkar, Chetan Sharma held the position until 2022-23. However, in the meantime, Shiv Sunder Das briefly served as interim Chief Selector in 2023.
Ajit Agarkar's career
Ajit Agarkar retired from all forms of cricket in October 2013. He was appointed the chief selector of Team India in 2023, marking 10 years since his retirement.
During his international cricket career, Agarkar took 288 wickets in 191 ODIs and scored 1269 runs, including three half-centuries. He took 58 wickets in 26 Test matches, while he played only four T20 matches for Team India, in which he took three wickets.
