Long-distance train journeys are comfortable and convenient, but they often come with one common worry, especially during overnight travel: what if you miss your station while sleeping? Many passengers set alarms on their phones, depend on co-travellers, or try to stay half-awake to avoid oversleeping. To make this easier, Indian Railways offers a simple but highly useful facility known as the Destination Alert.
This feature is designed for passengers travelling at night on long routes. Once activated, it sends an SMS notification and an automated reminder call shortly before your selected station arrives. The alert typically reaches you about 20 minutes before the train is scheduled to reach your destination, giving you enough time to wake up, gather your belongings and get ready to deboard without panic.
This service is particularly helpful for solo travellers, elderly passengers and anyone unfamiliar with the route. Instead of constantly checking the time or the next station, you can relax and sleep peacefully, knowing that you will be notified before arrival.
When the destination alert works
The wake-up alert is available only under certain conditions:
- It works on long-distance train journeys.
- It is active during night hours, generally between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM.
- The alert is linked to your ticket’s PNR number.
- Notifications are sent only to the mobile number used to activate the service.
Because it is an automated system, it is important to set it correctly using the same phone number on which you want to receive the alert.
Method 1: Activate destination alert by calling 139
Indian Railways provides a dedicated helpline number, 139, which can be used through an interactive voice response (IVR) system.
Follow these steps:
- Dial 139 from your mobile phone.
- Choose your preferred language when prompted.
- In the main menu, select option 7.
- Then choose option 2 for the destination alert service.
- Enter your 10-digit PNR number when asked.
- Press 1 to confirm the details.
After successful activation, you will receive a confirmation SMS. Once your journey reaches the night travel window, the system will automatically send you a text message and place a reminder call around 20 minutes before your chosen station arrives.
Method 2: Set the alert using SMS
If you prefer not to go through the voice menu, you can use a simple text message.
- Open the SMS app on your phone.
- Type:
ALERT <PNR number>
(for example: ALERT 1234567890) - Send this message to 139.
You will receive a reply confirming that the wake-up alert has been registered for your journey.
Important points to remember
- Use the same mobile number for calling or sending SMS that you want to receive the alert on.
- Standard call or SMS charges apply when using 139.
- If your journey is during daytime hours, the service will not trigger alerts.
- The alert is based on scheduled arrival, so unexpected delays may slightly affect timing.
Why this feature is useful
- Helps avoid missing your destination while sleeping
- Reduces stress during overnight travel
- Works without needing internet access or smartphone apps
- Quick to activate and easy to use for any passenger
Unlike phone alarms, which depend on estimated arrival times that may change, this system is connected to railway data and adjusts to the train’s expected arrival at your selected station.
Travel smarter and rest better
Overnight train travel should be restful, not worrying. By enabling the destination alert before your journey, you can sleep comfortably without fear of overshooting your stop. Whether you are travelling alone or with family, this small step can make a big difference in ensuring a smooth and stress-free arrival.
With just a short call or a single SMS, your personal wake-up reminder will be ready to guide you safely to your destination.
