Home Remedies:  A clogged kitchen sink drain can become a daily nuisance. If water accumulates in the sink while washing dishes, smells, or doesn't drain at all, it's often due to food particles, oil, and grease accumulating in the drain. In such a situation, some simple remedies can be tried before immediately calling a plumber. However, if the clog is severe, water is constantly backing up, or there's a leak in the pipe, it's best to seek professional help.

Start with warm water and dishwashing liquid

If the sink drain is slowly draining due to oil or grease buildup, first drain as much of the water as possible. Then, pour a small amount of dishwashing liquid down the drain and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, slowly add hot water. Very hot water can damage some pipes, so avoid using boiling water, especially if you're not familiar with the pipe material. This method may help loosen minor clogs and grease.

Unclog a clogged sink drain with a plunger

If the water still won't drain, you can use a sink plunger. Fill the sink with enough water to submerge the rubber part of the plunger. Place the plunger firmly against the drain and press it up and down several times. This creates pressure inside the pipe, which can help loosen the clogged debris. If the sink has two drains, blocking the other drain and using the plunger may be more effective. If the water starts flowing after a few attempts, flush the drain thoroughly with clean water.

Be careful not to recur

To prevent frequent clogs in the sink drain, throw leftover food from dishes into the trash before washing. Avoid pouring oil, ghee, and grease directly into the sink, as these can solidify and clog the pipes. It may also be helpful to install a small strainer or mesh over the drain to prevent food particles from entering the drain. If these measures still don't clear the drain, the drain emits a strong odor, or a leak is visible in the pipe, it's safer to seek the help of a plumber rather than attempting to unclog it yourself.
