Decrease in crude oil imports from Russia.
Russia's share of India's oil imports declined in August, while supplies from the Middle East increased. India's Russian oil imports in August fell 16.5% compared to the previous month in July, to about 2.1 million barrels per day (bpd).
Supply from the Middle East has increased because the UAE's state-owned company ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) has started supplying crude oil from its terminals like Fujairah and Sohar located outside the Strait of Hormuz.
Purchasing oil from Russia has become an economic risk for Indian refineries following the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, a law recently signed by US President Donald Trump. This strict law gives the US president the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries buying oil and gas from Russia.
Since India is still negotiating a trade deal with the US, to safeguard its broader economic interests, Indian refineries are gradually trying to reduce their dependence on Russian oil to 20% to 30%.
