Millions of people send Direct Messages (DMs) to each other on Instagram every day. Sometimes, we want to read someone's message, but don't want the other person to know that we've seen it. In such situations, some of Instagram's privacy settings and other easy methods can help.
Read messages by turning off Read Receipts
Instagram now offers the option to manage Read Receipts. If your account has this feature, open Instagram and go to Profile → Menu (☰) → Settings and activity → Messages and story replies → Show read receipts. Read Receipts can be turned off from here.
After you turn off Read Receipts, the recipient will no longer see Seen on messages you've read. However, the name or location of the options in Settings may vary slightly between versions of Instagram.
You can read the message from the notification
If the message is short, you can read it in your phone's Notification Panel. Instagram notifications must be turned on for this. This method doesn't require opening the Instagram chat, so it can avoid opening the message within the chat.
Keep these things in mind
Don't try to read Instagram DMs without being seen using any third-party apps or websites. Such apps may ask for your Instagram account login details and pose a risk to your privacy.
