H1N1 cases are rising in Delhi, prompting the government to strengthen hospital preparedness and closely monitor the situation. The capital recorded 166 new H1N1 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of reported infections to 2,612. At the same time, the overall number of Influenza-A cases has climbed to nearly 3,300.
Amid the increase in infections, Delhi Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh visited Indira Gandhi Hospital in Dwarka to assess its readiness for handling H1N1 patients. During the inspection, he reviewed the dedicated isolation ward, treatment facilities and arrangements made for suspected and confirmed cases.
The Health Minister also interacted with doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers to understand the situation on the ground. He reviewed the availability of hospital beds, oxygen support, medicines, intravenous fluids, laboratory testing facilities and other essential medical resources.
Dedicated H1N1 Clinic Set Up for Suspected Patients
As part of the preparedness measures, a dedicated H1N1/swine flu clinic has been established at Indira Gandhi Hospital. Patients showing symptoms associated with the infection will first undergo screening at the clinic.
Those who test positive and require hospitalisation can then be shifted to the dedicated H1N1 ward, where their condition will be monitored and treatment provided according to medical requirements.
The arrangement is intended to help hospitals identify suspected infections quickly while keeping H1N1 patients appropriately separated from other patients.
Delhi Government Says There Is No Need to Panic
Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh urged residents not to panic over the increasing number of cases. He said the Delhi government and Health Department are prepared to manage the situation and hospitals have the required doctors, nursing staff, laboratory technicians, medicines, oxygen, beds and testing facilities.
According to the minister, preparations are also being made in advance in case Delhi witnesses a further surge in infections. Hospital capacity and healthcare resources can be strengthened further depending on how the situation develops.
He said he is personally monitoring developments and conducting regular hospital inspections to ensure that facilities remain prepared.
Senior Health Department officials, Medical Superintendents and Medical Directors have also been directed to keep all necessary arrangements ready. The minister indicated that hospital inspections will continue and that facilities may be checked whenever required.
Awareness Campaign on H1N1 Symptoms and Prevention
During his visit, the Health Minister also reviewed Information, Education and Communication (IEC) material being used in hospitals. These materials are intended to educate people about H1N1 symptoms, preventive measures and precautions that can help reduce the risk of infection.
The Health Department is closely tracking the situation to ensure patients receive timely treatment. Hospitals have been asked to maintain adequate medical resources, including specialist doctors, nursing personnel and laboratory staff.
The Delhi government, under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is also focusing on strengthening healthcare infrastructure to deal with seasonal illnesses. Government hospitals have been instructed to remain vigilant and respond quickly if the number of patients increases further.
H1N1 Precautions: What Delhi Residents Should Keep in Mind
Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary visits to crowded places, particularly when seasonal infections are spreading. Regular handwashing with soap and water, use of hand sanitiser and maintaining good personal hygiene can help lower the risk of infection.
Extra attention should be given to children and elderly people, and medical advice should be sought if concerning symptoms develop or a person's condition worsens.
H1N1 symptoms may resemble common seasonal influenza and can include fever and other flu-like symptoms. The Health Minister said patients are recovering with appropriate treatment and medical monitoring.
With H1N1 cases continuing to rise, the Delhi government's immediate focus is on keeping hospitals prepared, identifying infections promptly and ensuring that patients who need medical attention receive treatment without delay.
