Food delivery platform Zomato is currently in the news. Recently, the company decided to no longer sell analog cheese on its platform. Meanwhile, news has emerged that has disappointed Zomato employees. The news is that Zomato has decided to lay off approximately 240 employees.
Which employees were laid off?
The company has decided to close its Customer Delight (Customer Support) operation in Hyderabad. This work will now be operated exclusively from a single location in Gurugram. The company made this decision after reviewing its Customer Delight model and employee needs. The company stated that there were no shortcomings in employee performance, and that the company's decision was based solely on its own profitability.
What's the reason for these layoffs?
Sources close to the company have revealed that Zomato's customer support model has undergone a major shift in the last six months. Now, much of the customer support work is being handled by external expertise companies. Consequently, the company has decided to manage the remaining in-house work as a single team based in Gurugram. The company wants this team to work closely with its product, technology, data, and business teams.
All 240 employees who have lost their jobs will receive a severance package equal to four
months' salary. This will include notice period salary and a one-time additional amount. Furthermore, employees' medical insurance and counseling will continue until March 31, 2027. The company will also provide outplacement support to help them find new job opportunities. Furthermore, the laptops and earphones provided by the company will also be returned to employees for personal use.
