Kitchen expenses rise again, veg-nonveg thali becomes expensive
Kitchen Budget: If you're feeling like your kitchen expenses are steadily rising these days, it's not just your perception; the latest data also bears this out. In June 2026, the budget for home-cooked meals saw a steady increase, especially for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. This is the first time in the last five months that the cost of both has increased.
The biggest reason for the rise in household kitchen expenses is the surge in the prices of cooking oil, LPG cylinders, and broiler chicken. According to Crisil Intelligence's monthly 'Roti-Rice Rate' report, the price of a vegetarian thali reached ₹28.4 in June, compared to ₹27.4 in May. Meanwhile, the average price of a non-vegetarian thali was recorded at ₹58.2 in June, compared to ₹56.5 in May.
Why did non-veg thali become expensive?
- The reason for the increase in the price of non-veg thali is the rise in the price of broiler chicken.
- Compared to last year, the price of broiler chicken has increased by about 7%, while in one month it has increased by about 2%.
- According to Crisil, broiler chicken contributes the largest share to the total cost of a non-veg thali.
- This is the reason why the entire thali became expensive due to an increase in its price.
What are the reasons for increased kitchen expenses?
- Onion prices rose by about 2% due to the arrival of expensive Rabi stock in the market.
- Prices of edible oil and LPG cylinders increased by about 10-10%.
- In one year, the price of tomato increased by about 31% to Rs 42 per kg.
- Due to tension in West Asia, supply was affected, and pressure on the prices of many essential commodities increased.
- Compared to May, tomatoes became costlier by 17%, onions by 8% and potatoes by 5% in June.
- With the arrival of the new Rabi crop, potato prices fell by 14% on an annual basis, providing some relief in costs.
