IRDAI curbs insurance fraud

Purchasing insurance online is a fairly easy decision. You can compare plans and find the one that best suits you, all in just a few steps. However, for many, this experience can be fraught with difficulties. This is because insurance portals use dark patterns on their websites, tactics that can mislead customers. Recently, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) has come up with a solution to put an end to this fraudulent practice by insurance companies.

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has directed insurance companies and aggregators to identify and eliminate dark patterns within 15 days. IRDAI has strictly instructed insurance companies to ensure that the user interfaces on their digital platforms comply with CCPA guidelines within 15 days, and to develop and submit a removal plan within one month.

What are 'dark patterns'?
'Dark patterns' are designs used on apps and websites that mislead users. These designs trick users into doing things that should be done thoughtfully and calmly. In insurance portals, these patterns include making auto-renewal difficult to cancel, initially showing low prices and then adding hidden costs, bombarding users with calls, emails, or notifications, and forcing them to share excessive personal data. This leads many users to fall into the trap and accidentally purchase a policy they shouldn't.

This action by IRDAI will prevent misleading sales in the insurance sector. This action is beneficial for users; they will not feel cheated after purchasing insurance. Nor will anyone regret purchasing insurance due to incorrect information. This new rule will put a stop to this fraud by insurance companies.
