Retail sugar prices have recently fallen by about 5 percent. Ex-mill prices have also seen a 20 percent drop. So let's find out how much the prices have fallen.

Retail sugar prices fall
Sugar prices have risen even before the start of the festive season, causing significant distress to the general public. However, it now appears that people will find some relief from these prices in the coming days. Sugar prices have recently declined by approximately 5%. Meanwhile, ex-mill prices have seen a significant drop of approximately 20%.
What's happened to sugar prices?
However, current sugar prices are still significantly higher than they were some time ago. On September 2nd, the average retail price of sugar in the country was around ₹62.57 per kg. In comparison, on July 20th, the average retail price was ₹48.18 per kg. This means that despite the recent decline, sugar is still selling at a higher price than in July.
The government has also attempted to control prices.
The government has taken several steps to control sugar prices and ensure adequate availability in the market. The most significant step is setting a 400-ton stock limit for dealers. Furthermore, restrictions have been placed on stockpiles by wholesale buyers to curb attempts to hoard large quantities of sugar and sell them at a higher price later.
Furthermore, the government has permitted the tax-free import of 1 million tons of raw sugar. This will help increase the availability of sugar in the domestic market. The government hopes that these imports and other measures will ensure adequate stocks in the market and reduce pressure on prices.
Expected Prices to Fall Further
Following the reduction in retail prices, it is also expected that consumers will also receive lower sugar prices in the future. The government has stated that these measures will increase sugar availability during the festive season and may provide further price relief. This means that significant relief in sugar prices is expected in the future.
