Government approves plastic currency notes
Polymer Banknotes: For the past several days, there has been a lot of discussion in the market about plastic currency. Some time ago, news surfaced that polymer notes would soon be introduced, leading to speculation about whether demonetization would occur again. However, the RBI later clarified the situation, stating that no such demonetization would occur. Following this, the RBI proposed a trial of plastic notes to the government, which has now been approved by the government.
Plastic notes will be trialed.
The government recently approved a trial of plastic 10-rupee and 20-rupee notes before they are introduced into the market. This will involve the production of 100 million polymer notes of each denomination. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman provided detailed information in a written response in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
What did the Finance Minister say?
In his written reply to Sadar, the Finance Minister stated that the government has approved this proposal. According to the RBI, these polymer notes will be issued alongside the paper notes already in circulation. He also stated that the RBI has stated that the process of purchasing these polymer notes is still in its initial stages. Therefore, it is not possible to predict at this time when the polymer notes will be available in the market or how much it will cost to produce or purchase them.
It should be noted that a few days ago, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), following a recommendation from its Central Board, sent this proposal to the government. In its proposal, it stated that these notes would first be trialed on a limited scale. If the trial is successful, polymer notes of 10 and 20 rupees could be issued regularly in the future.
Now, with government approval, it's expected that these notes will soon be available in the market. However, it's also clear that paper notes will remain in circulation as they are now, with no changes or withdrawals.
