LPG Crisis: The ongoing conflict in the Gulf countries is now affecting India's energy supply. Crude oil and gas supplies have been affected, leading to a decline in imports. Consequently, oil marketing companies are rapidly depleting their available stocks. The government and companies are gearing up to address this situation.
A report published in ET claimed that a reduction in the amount of LPG supplied in domestic gas cylinders was being considered. It stated that a plan was underway to provide approximately 10 kg of gas in a 14.2 kg cylinder. However, when the government was questioned about this, it flatly denied it during a press briefing. The government stated that there were no such plans and asked not to pay attention to rumors.
There is pressure on gas imports.
LPG imports into the country remain under pressure, as new shipments from Gulf countries are currently not arriving. Last week, approximately 92,700 tons of gas arrived via two ships, equivalent to just one day's consumption for the country.
Additionally, the resumption of supplies to commercial users has further increased pressure on available stocks. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum, has also indicated several times recently that the LPG situation in the country remains a matter of constant concern.
How will the price of low gas cylinders be decided?
If the decision to reduce the amount of gas in a cylinder is implemented, its price will be determined accordingly. According to officials, such cylinders will be labeled with a separate sticker to clearly indicate that they are underfilled.
For this, bottling plants will have to make changes in their systems and will also have to obtain necessary regulatory approvals before starting the entire process.
Companies have expressed concern.
Companies have also expressed their concerns about this new plan. They believe that the sudden reduction in cylinder weight could cause confusion and potentially lead to public opposition. Furthermore, it could cause problems in states where assembly elections are approaching.
According to the companies, if the situation worsens further next month, it is a matter of serious concern.
