ChatGPT Privacy Center Rolls Out: Check Memory, Temporary Chats, Ads and Data Controls in One Place

ChatGPT users are getting a new Privacy Center designed to make it easier to understand and find the platform's growing number of privacy and data controls.
As ChatGPT has expanded, users have gained settings covering Memory, personalization, connected apps, model improvement, location, advertisements, account security and data access. Finding the right control can therefore be confusing, particularly for people who do not regularly explore the Settings menu.
The new Privacy Center brings explanations and shortcuts to many of these options into one place.
Importantly, opening Privacy Center does not automatically change any of your existing settings or delete your information. Instead, it acts as a central guide that explains available privacy features and directs users to the appropriate control when they want to make a change.
What Happens When You Open ChatGPT Privacy Center?
Simply opening Privacy Center will not reset your ChatGPT account or automatically make it more private.
Your existing settings remain unchanged. Chats are not automatically deleted, data is not automatically removed, and existing privacy controls remain available through ChatGPT Settings.
Where a topic includes a Manage option, users can select it to open the relevant existing setting.
Privacy features can also differ depending on a person's ChatGPT plan, region, account type and workspace settings.
This means two users may not necessarily see exactly the same options.
Privacy Center Is Divided Into Three Main Areas
OpenAI currently organises Privacy Center into three broad sections: Personalized chats & ads, Chat privacy, and Data use & access.
Each section explains a different group of controls.
Personalized Chats and Ads
The Personalized chats & ads section provides information about features that can influence how ChatGPT experiences are tailored.
One important area is Memory.
When Memory is enabled, ChatGPT can use relevant information from available sources to make future conversations more useful and personalised. The exact sources and controls available depend on the user's account, plan and region.
Users should also understand that deleting a conversation and managing Memory are not necessarily the same action. Removing a chat does not automatically remove remembered information associated with it.
Memory controls can be reviewed separately through ChatGPT's personalization settings.
Ads Controls Are Available Only to Eligible Users
Privacy Center can also explain Personalized Ads for users who are eligible to receive advertisements.
Ads currently apply to eligible Free and Go users, while plans including Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu and ChatGPT for Healthcare are ad-free.
Eligible users can manage whether ads are personalized.
OpenAI states that advertisers do not get access to users' ChatGPT conversations, chat history, memories or personal details. Advertising also does not influence ChatGPT's answers.
Location-related information may also appear in this part of Privacy Center where the relevant feature is available.
Temporary Chat Offers More Privacy Choices
The second major section is Chat privacy, where users can learn about Temporary Chat and start a new temporary conversation.
Temporary Chats work differently from normal saved conversations.
While a conversation remains temporary, it does not appear in normal chat history, does not create or update Memory, and is not used to improve OpenAI's models.
OpenAI may, however, retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
There is another important detail in the current version of Temporary Chat: before beginning, users can choose whether the temporary conversation should be personalized or unpersonalized.
A personalized Temporary Chat can use existing memories, custom instructions and plugins where available, but it still does not create or update memories. Users who do not want the temporary conversation to use this existing personalization can choose the unpersonalized option.
If a Temporary Chat is saved, it becomes a regular conversation and then follows the account's normal personalization and model-improvement settings.
Data Use and Access Brings Important Controls Together
The third section is called Data use & access.
This area helps users understand several important account and data controls, including connected plugins and apps, model improvement, multi-factor authentication and options for exporting or deleting data.
For eligible personal accounts, the Improve the model for everyone setting determines whether content may be used to help improve OpenAI models.
Turning this setting off does not automatically remove conversations from chat history.
OpenAI says that content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces is not used to train its models by default.
Account Security Is Also Covered
Privacy is not only about chat history and model training.
Privacy Center also provides information about multi-factor authentication (MFA), which can add another verification step when signing into an account.
This is particularly useful because account security and data privacy are closely connected. Users who store important conversations or connect external services to ChatGPT should review the security controls available to their account.
Users Can Export or Delete Their Data
Eligible users can also find information about requesting a copy of their ChatGPT data.
Signed-in Free, Go, Plus and Pro users can request a data export through ChatGPT settings. OpenAI's Privacy Portal is another available route.
Availability is different for managed workspaces. For example, self-service data export is not generally available for Business, Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces, while eligible Edu workspaces may allow it when enabled by an administrator.
Account deletion is also a separate action and should not be confused with deleting an individual conversation.
How to Open ChatGPT Privacy Center
On the ChatGPT website, open the account menu, choose Help, and then select Privacy Center.
On the mobile app, open Settings and look for Privacy Center on iPhone or Privacy center on Android.
Desktop users may also see Privacy Center in the application's Help menu, which can open the feature in a browser.
The feature is currently rolling out, so users who cannot find it immediately may need to wait until it becomes available for their account or app version.
Which ChatGPT Plans Get Privacy Center?
OpenAI says Privacy Center is rolling out to signed-in users on Free, Go, Plus, Pro and Business plans across the web and ChatGPT's iOS and Android apps.
The current rollout does not include ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu or ChatGPT for Healthcare.
Individual privacy controls may still vary depending on account, region, plan and workspace policies.
Why ChatGPT Privacy Center Matters
The biggest change is not that ChatGPT suddenly has an entirely new set of privacy rules. Instead, Privacy Center makes existing and evolving privacy options easier to understand and locate.
Users can learn about Memory, Temporary Chat, advertising preferences, location, plugins and apps, model-improvement settings, MFA and data access without searching through multiple areas of the interface.
For anyone concerned about how their conversations are personalized, whether chats can contribute to model improvement, or how to access or delete their data, the new Privacy Center provides a clearer starting point for reviewing the controls available to their account.
