Due to the poor condition of the road, a motorcycle skidded as the rider applied the brakes, throwing Medha, a 32-year-old pillion rider, onto the road. A mini truck coming from the opposite direction crushed her, and she was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. This tragic incident has once again exposed the horrific reality of poor roads across the country. Government statistics show that countless people lose their lives daily due to such deadly roads.
Death statistics due to bad roads
Whenever a road accident occurs in India, speeding, negligence, or drunk driving are often blamed. However, a report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) tells a different story. According to the report, human error isn't the only culprit behind road deaths. Deadly potholes, incomplete construction, faulty road design, and lack of timely repairs are also contributing factors. Statistics show that an average of 80 people die every day in India due to poor roads and engineering deficiencies.
Horrific picture of road accidents in the country
The statistics emerging regarding road safety are alarming. In 2024, more than 487,000 road accidents were reported nationwide. Over 177,000 people lost their lives in these accidents, and millions were seriously injured and disabled. The poor condition of roads and engineering deficiencies alone contribute to thousands of accidents annually. This makes it clear that unless our infrastructure is strengthened, even enforcing traffic rules cannot fully protect human lives.
How many accidents are caused by deadly potholes?
According to government data, 29,628 accidents were reported across the country due to poor road conditions. Furthermore, deadly potholes contributed to over 100 serious accidents. The report also revealed that driver distraction was the leading cause of accidents, contributing to over 151,000 fatalities. Consequently, the combination of poor road conditions and even minor driver negligence is making Indian roads extremely dangerous and deadly on a daily basis.

A detailed report from the Ministry reveals that over 10,000 serious accidents were reported due to under-construction roads, poor design, and potholes. These accidents resulted in serious injuries to approximately 29,000 people, and a further 29,000 tragic deaths. When this annual figure is calculated on a daily basis, approximately 80 innocent people die every day due to poor road conditions and government negligence. This statistic demonstrates the extent to which our urban and highway infrastructure demands improvement.
Improvement initiatives and identification of black spots
The report also highlights that if strict construction standards are followed, accidents can be prevented on a large scale. It is crucial to periodically repair roads and identify and improve hazardous areas. Taking steps in this direction, the government has identified 6,358 black corridors (highly accident-prone areas) on national highways and initiated an improvement campaign there. If these identified areas are immediately repaired and modern technologies are properly utilized in new construction, 80 lives could be saved every day.
