Amazon fined for selling 'Ram Mandir Prasad'

Amazon Ram Mandir Prasad: The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a fine of one lakh rupees on the online shopping website Amazon. This action was taken for selling products on Amazon's platform that were being marketed as "Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad." According to the CCPA, these common sweets were offered as Prasad without the permission of the Ram Mandir Trust.

In a 19-page order issued on August 4, 2026, the CCPA stated that the name "Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad" holds special significance for Hindu devotees. It refers to offerings made to and blessed by the deity at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Therefore, using this name for ordinary sweets is misleading to customers.

The organization stated that the availability of such products on a large platform like Amazon can give the average customer confidence in their authenticity. The CCPA directed Amazon not to sell prasad, prasadam, mahaprasad, or similar religious items on the platform in the name of any religious institution or temple without the relevant organization's permission.

4 sweets were being sold

This matter came to light after a complaint by the Confederation of All India Traders on January 19, 2024. The complaint stated that four sweet items were being sold on Amazon under the name Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad for prices ranging from ₹299 to ₹385. The CCPA issued a show-cause notice to Amazon that same day.

Amazon argued that it is merely an online platform and is protected under Section 79 of the IT Act. However, the CCPA rejected this argument. The organization stated that Amazon's customer safety responsibilities remain under e-commerce regulations.

The investigation also revealed that the seller's information was not adequately displayed on Amazon. The complaint filing system also required a login. The total sales for these four items amounted to ₹2,526,309, while Amazon received ₹15,165.90 as service fees.
