This melon is a premium variety of cantaloupe. It's grown exclusively in the Yubari region of Hokkaido Island, Japan. It's not just a fruit, but a luxury product. It's known for its perfectly round shape, smooth, netted skin, shiny flesh, and exquisite sweetness. 

What is its specialty

Its high price is its most distinctive feature. This melon is a strictly geographically specific fruit, meaning it can only be grown in the Yubari region. The soil there is heavy with volcanic minerals, and the climate, with its wide temperature differences between day and night, creates an unparalleled sweetness and aroma. 

Not farming but a science experiment 

These melons are grown inside greenhouses under carefully controlled conditions. Farmers monitor temperature, humidity, sunlight, and even water quality with great precision. In many cases, only one melon is grown per plant so that all the nutrients are distributed to a single melon.

Lower production led to increased demand

This melon is produced in very small quantities each year. Fruits that don't meet the exacting standards for size, sweetness, or appearance are rejected. This limitation, combined with worldwide curiosity and demand, drives up prices. The first crop of this melon is traditionally sold at auction. Wealthy buyers often bid heavily to gain publicity and research from companies. In one auction, a pair of these melons sold for 3.3 million rupees.
