Strong earthquake tremors felt in Japan

A tsunami warning has been issued after a strong earthquake struck Japan. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Aomori Prefecture. The Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for Aomori, Iwate, and Hokkaido prefectures.

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Japan's Aomori Prefecture at around 11:15 pm on Monday (December 8, 2025). Following this, a warning has been issued for coastal areas in Aomori, Iwate, and Hokkaido prefectures. Residents in the affected areas have been advised to immediately evacuate to safer locations and higher ground. Waves up to 3 meters high are expected along the coast of Iwate Prefecture, the central Pacific coast of Hokkaido, and the Pacific coast of Aomori Prefecture.

At the same time, waves of about 1 meter high are expected on the coasts of Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, the Sea of ​​Japan coast of Aomori prefecture, and the western and eastern Pacific coasts of Hokkaido.

Meanwhile, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture, registered a maximum intensity of 6 on the Japanese earthquake scale. According to the JMA, the quake struck at a depth of approximately 50 kilometers and measured its magnitude at 7.6.

According to local media, a tsunami wave measuring approximately 40 centimeters high was recorded at Mutsu Ogawara Port in Aomori Prefecture at 11:43 p.m. A Crisis Management Office has been established at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) of Japan to deal with the aftermath of the earthquake.

The US Geological Survey provided information.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) shared information about the earthquake that struck Japan. The USGS said the epicenter of the strong tremor was 73 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Misawa in northern Japan. It's worth noting that a 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck a remote island in southwestern Japan earlier Monday (December 8, 2025). However, no tsunami warning was issued at that time.
