ICC Women's World Cup 2025: The 13th edition of the World Cup began on Tuesday. India defeated Sri Lanka in the first match, but it was not the players who created history, but the fans.

The ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 got off to a historic start in Guwahati, where the first match between India and Sri Lanka set a major record. However, this record wasn't set by any team or player, but rather by the spectators. The match, played at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati, Assam, attracted 22,843 spectators. This is the record for the most attended group stage match of any Women's World Cup.
The previous highest-attended World Cup group stage match was last year, when India and Pakistan faced off in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024. The stadium attracted 15,935 spectators. This achievement is the latest record for this prestigious tournament, which has also set new standards for fan reach and a record prize pool in women's cricket history.
Sachin Tendulkar said in his column for the ICC, "I must commend the progress made over the last few years. The Women's Premier League has been nothing short of a game-changer. It has provided the platform, visibility, and financial security that generations of women cricketers could only dream of. Much of the credit for this goes to Jay Shah, who, during his tenure as BCCI Secretary, advocated for equal match fees for men and women and laid the foundation for the WPL. These steps may seem administrative on paper, but in reality, they change lives."
India's next match is against Pakistan.
The second match of the Women's ODI World Cup 2025 is being held today between Australia and New Zealand. Harmanpreet Kaur and her team will next face Pakistan on Sunday, October 5th. This match will be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
