Egg Safety Concern: Beware! Do you eat eggs every day? Nitrofurans found; FSSAI investigation underway.

Banned Antibiotics in Eggs: Eggs play an important role in most people's diets, but did you know they can also make you sick? Let us explain how and what's contained in them.

Harmful chemicals in eggs

Daily Egg Consumption Safety: There's a saying, "Eat eggs every Sunday or Monday." Well, this adage is now outdated, as questions are being raised about eggs. Eggs were once consumed in abundance for their protein content, but now, following controversy over the quality of those same eggs, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has taken strict action. On Monday, the FSSAI directed its regional offices across the country to collect samples of both branded and unbranded eggs and send them to 10 accredited labs for testing. These samples will be specifically tested for the presence of nitrofurans.

This action comes after questions were raised about the quality of eggs from the egg brand Eggos. Reports claimed that these eggs may contain traces of nitrofurans. Nitrofurans are a group of antibiotics whose use is strictly prohibited in food-producing animals. Health officials say that if these drugs are used illegally in poultry farming, their residues could reach the eggs. This concern led to the decision to conduct a nationwide sampling.

Questions about the quality of eggs

The matter came to light when an online report questioned the quality of the eggs. The issue subsequently became a topic of social media and public debate, leading to increased scrutiny from regulatory agencies. As the controversy escalated, Eggos issued a clarification, declaring its products safe. "As promised, our latest lab test reports from December 25th are now available, and we are sharing them publicly for everyone's reference," the company said in a statement on X. "Consumer safety and trust are of paramount importance to us. We will continue to adhere to the highest standards in our farms and processes."

What do the experts say?

However, medical experts say the problem of antibiotic misuse in the poultry sector remains a serious public health concern. Dr. Janith Lovanshi uploaded a video on social media, suggesting that if you're not willing to take the risk, you might want to try local eggs.

Other experts say that nitrofurans have been banned worldwide because their residues can persist in eggs even after cooking. They point out that long-term consumption of such contaminated eggs has been linked to genetic damage and an increased risk of cancer in animal studies. Furthermore, it can also cause liver and kidney damage.
