YouTube AV2 Technology

While watching videos on YouTube, everyone wants the video to be clear and consume less internet data. However, watching videos in high quality can consume more data. Furthermore, slow internet speeds can cause videos to stutter repeatedly. In such a situation, new technology is being developed to improve the video streaming experience. With this in mind, YouTube is now preparing to introduce a new video technology called AV2. This technology will allow for better-quality videos even with less internet data. The company may launch it on its website in early 2027.

What is AV2 technology and how will it work?

AV2 is a new video compression technology developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia). It aims to reduce the amount of data required to transmit video over the Internet while maintaining video quality. To achieve this, the video is compressed in such a way that its images can be reconstructed with less data. Previously, the AV1 codec was used. AV2 has been improved upon it. According to estimates, it can provide approximately 25 to 32 percent more compression efficiency than AV1.

YouTube launch may begin in 2027

According to YouTube, by March 19, 2026, more than 90% of all videos viewed on the platform were available in AV1 format. Now, the company aims to further improve video quality with AV2 technology. This could begin rolling out to YouTube's website in early 2027, though no information has been provided about when this technology will be available on smartphone apps and other devices.

It will also help in watching multiple videos simultaneously.

The use of AV2 isn't limited to improved video quality. This technology can also be useful for experiences like enhanced multi-view video and high-resolution video conferencing. This can help reduce network stress when viewing multiple video feeds on a single screen.

The benefits will not be available immediately on every device.

Even after AV2 is rolled out, not all users will benefit immediately. Browsers, software, and devices will need the necessary support. Currently, AV2-supported devices and media players are not widely available. Therefore, even after its launch on YouTube, it may take time for it to reach the general public.
