FM Nirmala Sitharaman on UPI Charges: The UPI fee has been a topic of much discussion for the past few days. Recently, the government clarified the confusion surrounding it. The issue was also discussed in the House of Representatives, during which Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman appeared quite angry. She even called Indian communists cowards.

What's the whole matter?
On Monday, during the monsoon session of Parliament, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman targeted CPI(M) MP John Brittas over the issue of imposing charges on UPI payments. While the House was discussing the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, Brittas accused the government of preparing to impose fees on UPI payments under pressure from the United States.

He said, "This goes against Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's statement that digital payment systems are a free public good." Britas also claimed that similar pressure was exerted on Brazil. According to him, this government policy differs from the 2017 to 2025 policy, which did not charge digital payment fees to merchants and customers.

Why was the Finance Minister angry?
Brittas presented his views and asked questions, but when it came to the Finance Minister's response, he walked out of the House. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressed her displeasure at this. She said, "Opposition members distort facts and are not present to listen when the government responds. Brittas is spreading confusion in the country regarding UPI fees."

Sitharaman also said, "I listen to all MPs and try to answer their questions during discussions. If an MP has the right to speak, they should also have the right and responsibility to listen to the government's response."
