Autoimmune Disease: Celltrion, a leading South Korean biopharmaceutical firm, said on Monday that its new biosimilar for the treatment of autoimmune diseases has received approval from the European Commission (EC). The EC has approved Celltrion's Avtozyma, a biosimilar to Actemra, for sale in European Union member countries in both intravenous and subcutaneous formulations, the company told Yonhap news agency.
A major step in healthcare,
Avtozma can be used as a treatment for several autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and giant cell arteritis. "The EC approval of Avtozma is a major step in Celltrion's mission to provide affordable, effective solutions for immunological disorders to the European healthcare system," Ha Tae-hun, vice president in charge of Celltrion's European operations, said in a press release. Avtozma was also approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for local sales last month.
The Korean drugmaker aims to commercialise 22 biosimilar products by 2030, up from 11 currently. Celltrion had said Avtozma had huge sales potential, given that its parent drug, Actemra, had raised 2.63 billion Swiss francs ($2.89 billion) on the World Lev in 2023.
Launched in 5 European countries
Earlier, the company announced that another autoimmune disease treatment by Celltrion has been launched in 5 major European countries. The treatment - Stactyma - is an ustekinumab biosimilar treatment for several chronic inflammatory diseases. According to Celltrion, it was released in France after launching in Italy and Spain in January
The launch in France follows its release in the UK in December and Germany in November. Last August, the drug won European Commission (EC) approval for biologic therapy in gastroenterology, dermatology and rheumatology indications. It was Celltrion's 7th biosimilar to win EC approval after Remsima, Truxima, Herzuma and others.
Celltrion said it plans to expand sales of Stacyma in Europe and introduce the product in the US in the future. According to data from healthcare researcher IQVIA, the European ustekinumab market was valued at $3.1 billion in 2023, while the global market size reached $20.4 billion.
