Sri Lanka defeated Oman by 105 runs in the first match of the T20 World Cup on Thursday. Batting first, Sri Lanka posted a mammoth 225 in 20 overs, the highest total in this edition so far. Pawan Ratnayake scored 214, and captain Dasun Shanaka scored a half-century at a strike rate of 250. Chasing the target, Oman could only manage 120 runs in 20 overs.
This is the Sri Lankan cricket team's second-largest victory by runs. It's worth noting that Sri Lanka also holds the record for the largest victory by runs in T20 World Cup history. Sri Lanka won by 172 runs against Kenya in 2007, a record that remains unbroken.
3 Sri Lankan batsmen hit fifties
Batting first, Sri Lanka didn't have a great start, losing both their openers in the powerplay. Pathum Nissanka was dismissed for 13 and Kamil Mishara for 8. Kusal Mendis and Pawan Ratnayake then shared a 94-run partnership, both of whom reached their fifties. Mendis made 61 off 45 balls with 7 fours, and Pawan made 60 off 28 balls at a strike rate of 214. He hit 1 six and 8 fours in his innings.
The captain scored a half-century at a strike rate of 250.
Captain Dasun Shanaka then played a blistering innings to take the score past 200, scoring a quickfire 50 off just 20 balls, hitting five sixes and two fours. Kamindu Mendis played a crucial role in taking the score to 225, scoring 19 off just seven balls.
Oman could score only 120 runs
Chasing the target, Oman got off to a poor start, losing three wickets for 36. Captain Jatinder Singh was dismissed for 1, Aamir Kaleem for 5, and Hammad Mirza for 9. Coming in at number four, Mohammad Nadeem put up a fight, but it wasn't enough. He shared a 42-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Wasim Ali (27). After Wasim's dismissal, no other batsman could even reach double figures. Nadeem remained unbeaten on 53, hitting one six and three fours in his 56-ball innings.
