Political tensions have intensified in Assam just days before the crucial विधानसभा elections, after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lodged formal complaints against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. The party has accused him of delivering an inflammatory speech during a recent election rally, triggering a fresh political controversy.
The matter has now reached both law enforcement authorities and the Election Commission, adding to the already heated pre-poll atmosphere in the state.
BJP Files Complaint With Police and Election Commission
According to BJP leaders, the complaint has been officially submitted to the Assam Police as well as the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The controversy stems from remarks allegedly made by Kharge during a rally held in Nilambazar, located in Karimganj district. BJP representatives claim that the speech crossed acceptable limits and violated the spirit of constitutional values.
They have urged authorities to take immediate action, stating that such statements could influence the electoral environment.
BJP Leaders Level Strong Allegations
Reacting strongly, BJP Assam spokesperson Pranjal Kalita criticized the Congress leadership, accusing it of double standards.
He argued that while the Congress often speaks about protecting the Constitution, its actions contradict those principles. Kalita described Kharge’s alleged remarks as “irresponsible” and “highly objectionable.”
The BJP has maintained that political discourse during elections should remain within constitutional boundaries and not provoke divisions among communities.
Concerns Raised Over Social Harmony
Several BJP leaders have expressed concern that the remarks could hurt religious sentiments and disrupt social harmony.
The party alleged that the statements were disrespectful towards certain traditions and beliefs, and warned that such rhetoric might create unnecessary tensions during a sensitive election period.
Calling it a “threat to communal harmony,” BJP leaders have urged strict scrutiny of campaign speeches to ensure peaceful elections.
Demand for Legal Action Intensifies
The BJP has formally demanded legal proceedings against Kharge, insisting that accountability is essential in maintaining fair and transparent elections.
This controversy has emerged just ahead of voting for the 126-member Assam Assembly, making it a significant issue in the ongoing political narrative.
Separate Controversy Involving Chief Minister’s Family
In a parallel development, the Indian National Congress (Congress) has raised allegations against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, claiming that his wife possesses multiple foreign passports.
Responding to the claims, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita dismissed the documents as “fake and fabricated.” He added that the government has verified the facts through official diplomatic channels and found no basis for the allegations.
Political Heat Rises Ahead of Voting
With elections approaching, such controversies are likely to dominate campaign narratives in Assam. Political analysts believe that statements, counter-statements, and legal complaints may continue to shape public discourse in the final days before voting.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes remain on how authorities respond and whether the issue will have any impact on voter sentiment in this high-stakes election.
