MBBS Seats in India: According to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board of the NMC, a total of 136,939 MBBS seats will be available across the country for the academic year 2026-27. These include 127,028 already approved seats.

MBBS Seats Increased in India 2026: There is good news for millions of students preparing to take MBBS admission through NEET UG 2026. The National Medical Council has released the official seat matrix for MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic year. This year, the number of MBBS seats across the country has been significantly increased.

With the addition of new seats, a total of 136,939 MBBS seats will be available across 823 medical colleges. 25 new medical colleges have also been approved, further expanding the scope of medical education. This seat matrix will serve as the basis for admissions during NEET UG 2026 counseling. 

9911 new seats added, total seats cross 1.36 lakh 

According to the NMC's Medical Assessment and Rating Board, a total of 136,939 MBBS seats will be available nationwide for the 2026-27 academic year. These include 127,028 previously approved seats, while 9,911 new seats have been approved this year. In addition, 2,400 new seats have been added in 25 new medical colleges. 

Seats increased in both government and private colleges 

This year, the number of seats has been increased in both government and private medical colleges. The total number of seats available in the 441 government medical colleges in the country will now be 63,296, with 2,111 new seats added. The total number of seats in the 382 private colleges will be 73,643, with 7,800 seats added this year.

25 new medical colleges also got approval 

The NMC has approved 25 new medical colleges for this academic session. These include seven government medical colleges, which will offer a total of 400 MBBS seats. 18 new private medical colleges will offer admissions for 2,000 seats. The remaining new seats have been added by increasing the admission capacity of existing medical colleges. Furthermore, the National Medical Council has clarified that all medical colleges must offer admissions only to those seats that have received official approval. No college will be permitted to admit more students than its approved capacity. If there are further changes to any institution's seating capacity, the MARB will issue a revised order, and the new seat matrix will be made available on the official website. 

7 days deadline for private medical colleges 

Private medical colleges that have received approval to open new institutions or increase seats this year must submit an electronic bank guarantee within seven days. After completing all formalities and verifying documents, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board will issue a letter of permission to the respective institutions. 

MBBS seats increased the most in these states 

Several states across the country have benefited significantly from the new seat allocation. Karnataka has seen the largest increase of 1,300 seats, followed by Tamil Nadu (950), Rajasthan (900), West Bengal (825), Telangana (810), and Uttar Pradesh (800). Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh have also seen significant seat increases.
