Are energy drinks safe?

Energy Drinks India: Amid the growing consumption of energy drinks and caffeinated beverages, the government has increased surveillance and enforcement. In a parliamentary reply, the government stated that the FSSAI is conducting ongoing inspections, labeling enforcement, and adulteration prevention campaigns. Furthermore, the findings have raised concerns.

According to the government, 223,808 food samples were tested across the country in 2025-26. Of these, 40,023 were found to be substandard. In these cases, 31,878 civil penalties were imposed, while 1,918 criminal convictions were obtained.

Strict action is also taken against selling it in the name of 'health drink'.

The FSSAI has already clarified that there is no legal category called 'Health Drink.' Following this, e-commerce platforms have been instructed not to display such products in the wrong category and to place them in the correct category.

Caffeine also has a limit.

According to the government, caffeinated beverages can contain between 145 and 300 milligrams of caffeine per liter. Each product must also carry a warning against consuming more than 500 milliliters per day.

What did FSSAI do to stop adulteration?

The government stated that the FSSAI is running the #NoToAdulteration campaign. Additionally, efforts are being made to detect adulteration and raise public awareness through Food Safety on Wheels, RAPID test kits, DART booklets, and mobile food testing labs.

What did the government say on cancer and heart disease?

Parliament was asked whether adulterated energy drinks and high caffeine content were contributing to the rise in cancer, stroke, and heart disease. The government's response failed to confirm any direct scientific link. It simply provided information about regulations, standards, and actions.
