Operating a phone while traveling in a moving car or bus is difficult for many people. Many people start feeling dizzy, nauseous, or uneasy after looking at the screen for a while. In such a situation, keeping this problem in mind, Google is gradually rolling out a feature called Motion Assist in Android 17. This feature shows some moving dots on the edges of the phone screen, which change their sides with the movement of the vehicle. Its purpose is to show the eyes the same movements that the body is feeling. So let's know what Motion Assist of Android 17 is and how this feature will solve the problem.

What is Android 17's Motion Assist?

Motion Assist is specifically designed to reduce motion sickness caused by using a phone while traveling. Google's feature is currently starting with Pixel phones and is being rolled out gradually. Some Pixel users have started receiving it, while it's not yet available on all phones running the same Android 17. The idea behind this feature isn't entirely new. Apple has been offering a similar feature called Motion Cues since 2024. Tests conducted on its use have shown it helps reduce, and in some cases eliminate, nausea from looking at the screen.

How will this feature solve the problem?

Motion Assist uses the phone's accelerometer and gyroscope. These sensors detect movement and changes in the phone's direction. Dots displayed on the edges of the screen then move in response to that movement. For example, if the vehicle turns right, the dots may appear to move left. When the vehicle brakes, the dots move forward. The goal is to provide visual movement to the eyes that matches signals from the body's inner ear. Reducing this lag can reduce discomfort during travel.

These options will be available in Motion Assist

1. To use Motion Assist, first go to the Google Play Settings of the phone.

2. Then, tap on your profile section. Here, you will find all the available services.

3. This section covers security and device features. Now, tap the Motion Assist option.

4. It also has an option that can automatically activate the feature as soon as it detects that the phone is in a moving vehicle.

5. Apart from this, by adding Motion Assist tile in Quick Settings, it can also be manually turned on or off as per requirement.

6. The user can also change the color, size, and opacity of the dots displayed on the screen. A randomization option can automatically change these settings. The phone also displays notifications when the feature is enabled.

Which users are getting this feature

The rollout of Motion Assist is currently limited. According to Android Authority, the feature is visible on some Pixel devices, while others are still missing Android 17. The company hasn't released a specific rollout schedule for all devices.
