At least 20 people were killed when a bus traveling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru caught fire in Chinnatekur, Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh. Governor S. Abdul Nazeer and Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep condolences.

A fire broke out in a private sleeper bus near Chinnatekur village in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool district early Friday (October 24, 2025). The bus, traveling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru, crashed on National Highway (NH-44). According to officials, at least twenty people have died in the accident, while several others are seriously injured.

 

Preliminary investigations revealed that a motorcycle got stuck under the bus, causing a petrol leak and starting the fire. The accident occurred around 3 a.m. when most passengers were fast asleep. Eyewitnesses said the fire spread so rapidly that the bus was completely engulfed in flames within minutes. District Collector A. Siri stated that there were 41 passengers on board, including two drivers. Twenty-one of them managed to escape and escape, while twenty others died. Eleven of the deceased have been identified so far.

The surviving passengers told a horrifying story.

Jayant Kushwaha, a survivor, said he woke up to find the bus on fire. The doors were locked and the driver was missing. Some passengers broke the emergency window and jumped out, saving their lives. Another passenger, Ashwin, said about twenty people managed to get out, but the rest were trapped in the flames.

Gross negligence of safety equipment

Fire department officials stated that the bus lacked basic equipment such as a safety hammer and an emergency glass breaker. After the bike became stuck in the bus, the friction caused a fire that quickly engulfed the entire bus. The bus driver and assistant fled after the accident, although police have identified them and are searching for them.

Treatment of the injured and relief work continues

The Kurnool District Administration immediately launched a relief operation. All the injured have been admitted to the government hospital. The District Collector has set up a control room to provide all necessary assistance to the affected families. Governor S. Abdul Nazeer has directed officials to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured and ensure no shortage of assistance to the affected families.
