Bank Holiday on July 6: Why Banks Will Remain Closed in These Areas After the Sunday Break

If you are planning to visit a bank in the first week of July, it is important to check the official holiday schedule before heading to your nearest branch. While banks across India will remain closed on Sunday, July 5, due to the regular weekly holiday, some locations will also observe a bank holiday on Monday, July 6 because of a regional festival.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) releases an official holiday calendar every year, and all public sector, private sector, foreign, and cooperative banks are required to follow it. However, not every holiday applies nationwide, as several are based on state-specific festivals and local observances.
Why Are Banks Closed on July 6?
Banks in Aizawl, Mizoram, will remain closed on Monday, July 6, in observance of MHIP Day, a regional event celebrated in the state.
The holiday is limited to Mizoram and will not affect banking operations in most other parts of the country. Customers living outside the state can expect banks to operate as usual, unless another local holiday has been declared in their region.
Anyone planning to complete branch-related work such as cash deposits, cheque clearance, demand drafts, or document verification in Aizawl should consider visiting the bank before the holiday or wait until branches reopen.
RBI Holiday Calendar Includes Regional Festivals
The RBI prepares its annual bank holiday list by considering national holidays, weekends, and regional festivals observed in different states and Union Territories.
Because of this, bank holidays often vary from one state to another. While one state may observe a public holiday for a local festival, banks in the rest of the country may continue normal operations.
Customers are advised to verify their city's holiday schedule before making plans for branch visits.
Banks to Remain Closed in Shillong on July 9
Another regional bank holiday is scheduled for Wednesday, July 9, in Shillong, Meghalaya.
Banks in the city will remain closed on the occasion of Behdienkhlam, one of Meghalaya's important traditional festivals. Banking services requiring physical branch visits will not be available during the holiday.
More Regional Bank Holidays on July 16
Several cities will also observe bank holidays on July 16 due to local festivals and celebrations.
Bank branches will remain closed in:
- Bhubaneswar
- Dehradun
- Imphal
- Shillong
In Bhubaneswar, the closure is linked to the annual Rath Yatra celebrations, while the other cities will observe regional festivals recognized in the RBI holiday calendar.
Weekend Bank Holidays in July
Apart from regional holidays, banks across India will remain closed on the following weekly holidays:
- July 5 (Sunday)
- July 12 (Second Saturday)
- July 13 (Sunday)
- July 26 (Sunday)
- July 25 (Fourth Saturday)
As per RBI guidelines, all scheduled banks remain closed on every second and fourth Saturday, in addition to all Sundays.
Will Online Banking and ATMs Work?
Although bank branches remain closed on holidays, most digital banking services continue to function normally.
Customers can still use:
- Internet banking
- Mobile banking apps
- UPI services
- ATM cash withdrawals
- Cash deposit machines (where available)
- Debit and credit card transactions
- IMPS, NEFT, and RTGS services (subject to operational timings)
These digital channels allow users to complete many routine banking transactions without visiting a physical branch.
Plan Your Banking Work in Advance
If your banking work requires in-person assistance—such as opening an account, updating KYC details, submitting documents, collecting cheque books, or completing loan-related formalities—it is advisable to complete these tasks on a working day before the scheduled holiday.
Checking the RBI's official holiday calendar in advance can help customers avoid unnecessary delays and ensure that important financial transactions are completed on time.
While digital banking has reduced dependence on physical branches, certain services are still available only at bank offices, making advance planning especially useful during months with multiple regional holidays.
