8th Pay Commission: Good news for pensioners, will there be a big change in the 8th Pay Commission?

This is important news for government employees. Several months have passed since the formation of the Eighth Pay Commission, and the commission has begun its work. The central government constituted this commission on November 3 and has been given 18 months to submit its report. The commission is currently working on the final stages. Under the chairmanship of Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, the commission's work has reached its next phase. This brings relief news for central government employees. A major update has emerged regarding the pensions of employees who retired before January 1, 2026.

Pensioner
organizations have demanded revision of pension and family pension for government employees who retired before January 1, 2026. The Bharat Pensioners Samaj (BPS) and the All India Defence Employees Federation (AIDEF) have appealed to the central government to make necessary changes in the scope of the Eighth Pay Commission so that these pensioners can also benefit from the revised pension.

According to the organizations, the current Terms of Reference (ToR) do not provide complete clarity on pensioners, family pensioners, and parity between old and new pensioners. Therefore, they demand a provision to reconsider the pension and post-retirement benefits of all employees retiring before or after January 1, 2026.

The BPS's main demands
include equality and transparency in pensions, as well as several other important issues. These include the reintroduction of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), improved healthcare for pensioners, extending the benefits of the Eighth Pay Commission recommendations to autonomous and statutory bodies under the central government, and extending these benefits to Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS).

Meanwhile, the Commission has scheduled upcoming meetings in Chennai, Puducherry, Chandigarh, and Jaipur. Therefore, millions of pensioners are keenly watching the government and the Commission's stance on pensioners' demands before submitting their final report.
