US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that a peace agreement with Iran had been reached. Hours before this announcement, the Iranian national football team arrived in the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Iran will play its first match against New Zealand on June 15th in Inglewood, California.
Iran's football team has set up its training camp in Mexico, and the entire team has been there until now. The team arrived in Los Angeles after flying from Tijuana, Mexico, just hours before the peace agreement between the United States and Iran was signed.
Given the tense situation between the United States and Iran, there was uncertainty surrounding the Iranian team's arrival in the USA. This is the first time the Iranian team has landed on American soil during the World Cup. Security was increased near the team's hotel, and security forces blocked traffic on some sections of the road.
Iran has been grappling with problems even before its first World Cup match. Originally, the team's training base was scheduled to be in Arizona, but following the worsening tensions between Iran and the United States, the team moved to Mexico.
Meanwhile, ahead of their first World Cup match, Iran striker and captain Mehdi Taremi said that this tense atmosphere prevents any joy from developing. He added that it has affected other players besides Iran. Taremi further stated that tension and fear have prevailed among the players since their arrival in the Americas for this World Cup.
Iran's World Cup schedule
Iran has been placed in Group G for the FIFA World Cup, which also includes New Zealand, Egypt, and Belgium. Iran's first match will be against New Zealand on June 15 (June 16 Indian time). Their second match will be against Belgium on June 21, and then against Egypt on June 26.
It should be noted that the USA, Canada, and Mexico are jointly hosting the FIFA World Cup 2026. Iran will play all of its group matches in the United States.
