Why should you use a seat during worship? Learn about its religious significance and rules.

Puja Path Aasan: Many devotees stand while performing puja. Otherwise, due to a lack of space, people often install the temple on the wall. But is this religiously correct? Let's find out.

Puja Path Niyam: Hinduism prescribes many rules for performing puja. If these rules are not followed, the puja is considered incomplete or results in no fruition. Our scriptures outline certain rules that are considered essential to follow.

Such as covering your head during worship, wearing clean and pure clothes, paying attention to direction, and most importantly, sitting on a seated posture. Sometimes, people perform worship without a seat, which is considered inauspicious from a religious perspective. Let's explore the religious and scientific reasons behind this.

Religious beliefs

According to the scriptures, the temple should be located higher than the place where the devotee is sitting and praying. However, sometimes people build the temple slightly higher, or due to lack of space, they place it against a wall.

Because of this, they are forced to perform the puja while standing. However, this practice does not yield the desired results and is also considered against scriptural principles.

Follow these rules while performing puja

  • Use a seat while performing puja.
  • While performing puja, keep in mind that the cloth of the seat should be clean and pure.
  • While sitting for worship, your face should always be towards the east.
  • There should be a bell, incense, agarbatti and lamp on the right side of the seat.
  • On the left side, there should be puja materials like fruits, flowers, water vessel and conch.

Why is it necessary to worship while sitting on a seat?

Religious texts state that worship is a moment of communication between the devotee and God. Therefore, the mind and body must remain steady, and sitting on a seated posture helps maintain that stability.

Even in ancient times, sages and saints used specific postures for meditation. Therefore, following these rules will yield positive results for the practitioner and will also be considered scripturally meaningful.
