The three rebel Muslim MPs elected from the Muslim-majority Murshidabad Lok Sabha seat have maintained a distance from the BJP and the NDA, although they remain friendly with the Bengal Chief Minister.
Who are the three rebel MPs who are now distancing themselves from the BJP?
There is confusion surrounding three rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs. Despite being part of the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), all three have maintained a distance from the BJP and the NDA. These three rebel MPs were elected from the Muslim-majority Lok Sabha seats of Murshidabad. The list includes Murshidabad MP Abu Taher Khan, Jangipur MP Khalilur Rahman, and Baharampur MP Yusuf Pathan.
These three MPs also skipped the recent NDA parliamentary party meeting chaired by PM Modi for the second time, clearly maintaining their distance. Meanwhile, they attended a meeting convened by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in Delhi.
Abu Taher, Khalilur Rahman, and Yusuf Pathan were all part of the rebel group of 20 Lok Sabha MPs who broke away from Mamata Banerjee after the TMC's defeat in the Bengal elections. However, they all later joined the NCPI.
Among them ,
Abu Tahir Khan is a seasoned politician who began his political career with the Congress and joined Mamata Banerjee's TMC in 2019, becoming a Member of Parliament for the first time that same year. He retained his seat in the 2024 elections. Rehman is a two-time Lok Sabha MP from the Jangipur constituency. Yusuf Pathan is a former Indian cricketer who joined the TMC ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. During this time, he defeated Congress veteran Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in Baharampur.
Abu Tahir Khan, speaking to The Indian Express, said, "We will not join or support the NDA or the BJP." However, he added that he will remain a part of the NCPI. Tahir added that he had a meeting with the West Bengal Chief Minister on development issues.
