Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a visit to Australia, where under the historic defence agreement between the two countries, maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region will be strengthened through 'Maritime Domain Awareness' technology.

What is Maritime Domain Awareness?
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's crucial strategic visit to Australia, the two countries forged a historic partnership in defense and security cooperation. New agreements were signed during the visit to strengthen maritime defense under the India-Australia Maritime Security Cooperation Roadmap. At the heart of this mega-deal is Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) technology, designed to deter the aggression of adversaries like China in the Indo-Pacific region by eliminating their lethal submarines.
A new security complex in the Indo-Pacific region
India and Australia have decided to elevate their military relations to new heights under this historic agreement for 2026. This agreement will significantly enhance the training of military officers, defense education, exchange programs, and strategic engagement between the two countries. Most importantly, both countries will jointly monitor all suspicious activities, both above and below sea level. This partnership is not just a union of two countries, but a strategic initiative that will provide a significant guarantee of security to all countries engaged in maritime trade.
What is Maritime Domain Awareness, the digital guardian of the ocean?
Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) is a highly advanced technological network that provides a real-time, live picture of every activity, both large and small, occurring within and outside the ocean. It allows for immediate tracking and monitoring of any activity that could harm national security, maritime trade, the economy, or the environment. This technology collects data from various sources to create a live digital map of the ocean, enabling timely prevention of any untoward incident or enemy intrusion.
Satellite and radar surveillance
This advanced technology operates on an interconnected network of various smart sensors and communication systems. Automatic identification systems on ships provide live information about ships' precise locations and speeds to satellites. Additionally, specialized radars operating from space capture clear images, piercing the ocean floor even in the most inclement weather or pitch darkness. Artificial intelligence is also used in this entire system, which detects unusual behavior of suspicious vessels within minutes.
The enemy can be controlled
The greatest advantage of MDA technology is its ability to effectively curb piracy, drug trafficking, illegal arms traffic, and terrorist plots. Furthermore, this sophisticated net makes it impossible to detect oil spills, garbage dumping, and illegal fishing vessels operating without permission. This technology also serves as a lifeline for locating and rescuing people stranded at sea during times of crisis or natural disasters.
Grand siege of the Quad countries
To strengthen this security system globally, the Quad, comprising India, Australia, the United States, and Japan, has jointly launched the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness (IMAA). This campaign uses satellites to track Chinese submarines and suspicious vessels throughout the Indo-Pacific region. India, on its part, is using the National Maritime Domain Awareness Project and indigenous technologies to secure its borders. This mega-deal with Australia will prove to be a major threat to enemy submarines in the future.
