Oppo has developed prototypes of trifold phones to compete with Samsung, but hasn't launched them. The company is waiting for costs to come down and demand to increase.

Oppo had created prototypes of a trifold phone.
After the advent of foldable phones, competition is now increasing in the trifold phone segment. The Chinese company Huawei was the first to launch a trifold phone. Following this, Samsung also entered the segment and launched its first trifold phone in late 2025. Now, Oppo has revealed that it too had developed several prototypes of a trifold phone, but did not launch them.
What is Oppo planning?
Following Huawei and Samsung, other companies are now preparing to enter this segment. Xiaomi is also working on a similar device. Oppo, on the other hand, has devised a different strategy. Despite having the technology ready, Oppo is not in the mood to launch a tri-fold phone. Oppo's product management confirmed this, stating that the company had developed several prototypes of a tri-fold phone.
Why is Oppo not launching a tri-fold phone?
While a tri-fold phone may seem like a cool gadget, manufacturing and selling one is incredibly difficult. These devices come with high costs, leading to sky-high prices and a difficult customer base. Even the largest companies struggle to make money from such phones. Therefore, launching such an expensive device could have been challenging for Oppo. According to a recent report, Samsung is selling its tri-fold phone at a loss and is unable to even recoup its costs.
Will Oppo not launch a tri-fold phone?
According to media reports, Oppo has not completely distanced itself from the tri-fold phone segment. The company has overcome the technical challenges by developing prototypes. Oppo is currently waiting for manufacturing costs to decrease and consumer demand to stabilize, considering the segment.
