Rising fuel prices impact the aviation industry
American Spirit Airlines Cancels Flight: The US-Iran war is causing oil prices to rise worldwide. The aviation industry has not been spared, and the impact of rising ATF prices is rapidly becoming apparent. Many airlines are canceling some flights, while others are shutting down entirely. In this context, American Spirit Airlines has also decided to cancel its flights with immediate effect.
Spirit Airlines cancels flights
According to a report in the Economic Times, US-based low-cost Spirit Airlines has decided to temporarily cancel all its flights due to the pressure of rising fuel prices. The company says that the rapid increase in international crude oil prices has significantly increased its operating costs, making it uneconomic to operate at current fares.
Speaking about the decision, Dave Davis, President and Chief Executive Officer of Spirit Airlines,
said, "For more than 30 years, Spirit Airlines has played a role in making travel accessible and bringing people together, while also contributing to affordable fares across the industry." He further explained that they had developed a restructuring plan in a meeting with their bondholders in March 2026, but this decision was made due to the sudden increase in fuel prices.
Learn about the refund process.
For passenger convenience, the airline has stated that passengers who purchased tickets directly using credit or debit cards will be automatically refunded. Those who booked through a travel agent will need to contact their agent for a refund. However, the amount or compensation for bookings made using vouchers, credits, or loyalty points will be determined later during the bankruptcy process.
It should be noted that just yesterday, following reports of rising fuel prices, Air India also cancelled 100 of its daily flights. This decision comes after the fuel price hike. An advisory is being issued to avoid inconvenience to passengers.
