Hearing in the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has taken a tough stand on Tamil Nadu's free electricity scheme, issuing notices to the central and state governments. Hearing a petition filed by the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO), a bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna raised several important questions and expressed concern about the culture of "freebies" spreading across the country.

The Supreme Court issued a stern warning to the Tamil Nadu government.

During a hearing on February 19, 2026, the Supreme Court asked, "What kind of culture are we developing in this country? There should be welfare schemes for those who cannot afford to pay their electricity bills. Why is it free for everyone?" Justice Khanna further stated that this trend is growing in every state, and the court is deeply concerned. The bench questioned the Tamil Nadu government, asking why, if the state has so much money, it isn't investing it in infrastructure, hospitals, schools, and colleges. The court remarked that instead of distributing goods during elections, states should review their policies. The state's duty is to create employment opportunities.
