Tewolde Gebremariam: Air India has a new CEO and MD. The Tata Group has appointed Tewolde Gebremariam, the former head of Ethiopian Airlines, as its new CEO. Previously, he was set to take charge of PIA.
Tewolde was the new CEO of Air India to take over Pakistan's PIA.
Air India CEO Tewolde Gebremariam: Air India has a new CEO and Managing Director. The Tata Group has appointed Tewolde Gebremariam, former head of Ethiopian Airlines, to this role. Interestingly, before taking over Air India, his name was also being considered for the new CEO of Pakistan International Airlines. PIA was preparing to announce his appointment, but Air India appointed him as its new chief before that could happen.
The name was also at the forefront in PIA.
According to reports, Tewolde Gebremariam was considered a frontrunner to lead the airline's new direction after it went private in July. It was reported that his name was considered almost certain, pending only the necessary security clearances. PIA officials believed that his experience could help revitalize the airline.
Meanwhile, the Tata Group completed a worldwide search for a new CEO for Air India and selected Tevolde for the position. Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said that his experience in transforming the airline on a large scale, improving operations, and running it profitably will be crucial to the company's future growth.
Tewolde Gebremariam served as CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group from 2011 to 2022. During his tenure, the airline became Africa's largest airline group. During this period, the airline added several new aircraft, launched several new international routes, and established Addis Ababa as a major aviation hub in Africa. He stepped down in 2022 due to health reasons.
Now the responsibility is to take Air India forward.
Upon receiving his new responsibility, Tevolde said that he was honored to take charge of Air India. He stated that he would strive to improve Air India's service, provide better service to passengers, and ensure continued growth. Air India also praised the work of former CEO Campbell Wilson. The company stated that its focus will now be on increasing profits, expanding its reach in other countries, and providing even better service to passengers.
