Bangladesh PM Tariq Rahman's big decision

The US Supreme Court declared Donald Trump's tariffs on various countries illegal and struck them down. Trump soon after announced a 10% global tariff. Meanwhile, Tarique Rahman's government said on Saturday (February 21, 2026) that Bangladesh would review its trade agreement with the US following the Trump administration's revocation of the arbitrary tariffs.

Bangladesh's decision on the trade deal with America

In an interview with The Daily Star, Khadija Naznin, an official secretary of the WTO wing of Bangladesh's Ministry of Commerce, said, "We will now first analyze the trade agreement with the US and then make a decision." She added that the Bangladesh-US trade agreement also contains an exit clause. This is a condition in the agreement that allows both countries to terminate the agreement according to pre-determined rules.

He said, "The exit clause is mentioned only in the case of Bangladesh. This clause is not mentioned in any other agreement the US has signed with any other country. That is why we will make decisions based on government policy." Bangladesh signed a trade agreement with the US on February 9 under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus.

Big statement from Commerce Ministry official

According to the report, an official from Bangladesh's Commerce Ministry stated that the US Supreme Court's decision has voided the trade agreement between the two countries, meaning the US decision will no longer apply to Bangladesh. He said, "We will soon discuss this in detail and take necessary action. The agreement with Bangladesh is likely to be voided, as the entire agreement has been voided."

Bangladesh was one of the few countries that signed a reciprocal trade agreement (ART) with the United States on February 9, reducing reciprocal tariffs from 20 percent to 19 percent. The United States is Bangladesh's largest export destination. The interim government reached an agreement with the Trump administration to ensure market access. This trade deal was widely criticized for being one-sided.

How much tariff did America impose on Bangladesh?

US President Donald Trump declared reciprocal tariffs under a national emergency on April 2, 2025. Initially, Bangladesh imposed a 37 percent tariff, which was later reduced to 35 percent. Following trade deal negotiations, this was further reduced to 20 percent and, after the agreement, to 19 percent.
