Telegram is widely used for private chats, group discussions, and channel broadcasts. However, some users eventually decide to leave the platform for personal, privacy, or productivity reasons. If you are planning to quit Telegram, it is important to understand that deleting your account is a permanent action and cannot be reversed.
Once a Telegram account is removed, all chats, contacts, media files, and group history linked to that account are erased. If you later register again with the same mobile number, Telegram will treat you as a completely new user. None of your previous conversations or groups will be restored.
In addition, people who already have your number saved may receive a notification that a new Telegram user has joined, and your old chat thread with them will remain empty from the new account onward.
Telegram offers two different ways to permanently deactivate an account:
- Automatic deletion after a period of inactivity
- Instant deletion using the official deactivation webpage
Method 1: Enable auto-delete through inactivity on Android
Telegram has a built-in self-destruct setting that removes your account if you stay inactive for a chosen period. This is useful if you want to stop using Telegram but do not need immediate deletion.
Follow these steps on your Android phone:
- Open the Telegram app.
- Tap the three-line menu in the top-left corner.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Privacy and Security.
- Scroll down to find the section named Delete my account if away for.
- Choose the time limit after which your account should auto-delete.
You can pick from:
- 1 month
- 3 months
- 6 months
- 12 months
The default setting is usually 6 months.
If you do not log in or use Telegram during the selected time, the system will automatically erase your account along with all data. After deletion, recovery is not possible.
Method 2: Delete your Telegram account immediately via browser
If you want to remove your account right away, you need to use Telegram’s dedicated deletion page through a web browser on your phone or computer.
Here is the process:
- Open a browser and visit Telegram’s official account deletion page.
- Enter your mobile number along with the country code.
- Telegram will send a verification code to your Telegram app (not as SMS).
- Enter that code on the webpage.
- After logging in, choose the option Delete Account.
- You may optionally mention a reason for leaving.
- Confirm the deletion.
After confirmation, your account is permanently removed.
What gets deleted and what remains
- All personal chats, groups, and media are erased
- Your contact list is deleted
- Groups and channels created by you continue to exist but without the original creator
- Existing administrators in those groups and channels keep their rights
This action cannot be undone. You cannot restore messages or contacts later.
Important points to remember
- Rejoining later creates a fresh, empty account
- Old chat history will not return
- Frequent delete and re-create attempts may temporarily block new registrations for that number
If you are fully sure about leaving Telegram, use the instant deletion method. If you are unsure, the inactivity option gives you time to change your mind before permanent removal.
