Raksha Bandhan celebrations feel incomplete without sweets. From traditional barfi and laddoos to rasgullas and kaju katli, families usually bring home their favourite treats to celebrate the special bond between brothers and sisters. But if you want to skip crowded sweet shops or are looking for a quick homemade option at the last minute, this easy barfi recipe can come to your rescue.
The best part is that you need only two main ingredients to prepare this sweet. There is no complicated cooking process, and you don't even have to switch on the gas stove. With condensed milk and milk powder, you can prepare a soft and creamy barfi that has a rich, mawa-like flavour.
You can also decorate it with almonds, pistachios and edible silver leaf to give your homemade sweet a festive look. So, if you suddenly realise that there are no sweets at home on Raksha Bandhan, this simple recipe can be a convenient last-minute solution.
Only 2 Main Ingredients Needed for Instant Barfi
The two essential ingredients for this Raksha Bandhan special barfi are condensed milk and milk powder.
Condensed milk provides sweetness as well as a creamy texture, while milk powder gives the mixture body and creates a flavour similar to traditional milk-based sweets.
For approximately one 400-gram can of condensed milk, you can use around 3.5 to 4 cups of milk powder. You can choose either skimmed or full-cream milk powder depending on the richness and texture you prefer.
For decoration, you can additionally use:
- 8-10 almonds
- 8-10 pistachios
- 2-3 sheets of edible silver leaf
- Around half a teaspoon of ghee for greasing
Butter paper can also be used instead of greasing the container with ghee.
How to Make Instant Barfi Without Gas
Take a large mixing bowl and pour the condensed milk into it. Start adding the milk powder gradually instead of adding the entire quantity at once.
Mix the ingredients thoroughly after every addition. Continue adding milk powder and mixing until the mixture develops a smooth, soft dough-like consistency.
Make sure there are no large lumps in the mixture. The texture should be firm enough to hold its shape after setting but still soft enough to spread easily.
Prepare the Nuts and Barfi Tray
Once the barfi mixture is ready, keep it aside for a few minutes.
Meanwhile, finely chop the almonds and pistachios. These nuts are optional, but they can add a pleasant crunch and make the sweet look more festive.
Next, take a flat container or tray. Line it with butter paper or lightly grease the surface with ghee so that the barfi can be removed easily after setting.
Transfer the prepared condensed milk and milk powder mixture into the container. Spread it evenly using a spatula or spoon and gently level the surface.
Sprinkle the chopped almonds and pistachios evenly over the top and lightly press them into the mixture.
Refrigerate the Barfi Until It Sets
Once everything is arranged, place the container in the refrigerator and allow the barfi to set properly.
After it becomes firm, remove the tray from the refrigerator and carefully take the barfi out of the container.
For a traditional festive appearance, you can decorate the top with edible silver leaf. Finally, cut the barfi into squares, diamonds or any shape you prefer.
Your instant homemade Raksha Bandhan barfi is now ready to serve.
A Quick Last-Minute Raksha Bandhan Sweet
This recipe can be particularly useful when you don't have enough time to prepare traditional sweets or cannot visit the market at the last minute. Since there is no cooking involved, even beginners can easily try it at home.
With only condensed milk and milk powder as the main ingredients, you can prepare a creamy festive treat without spending hours in the kitchen.
Serve the homemade barfi after tying the rakhi, and it could make your Raksha Bandhan celebration even sweeter and more personal.
