How many points are needed to reach the playoffs?
Each team plays 14 matches in the league stage of the Indian Premier League. Based on statistics from the past few years, 16 points is considered a safe qualification criterion. A team earning 18-20 points generally secures a place in the top two. However, if the team has fewer than 16 points, its qualification depends on its net run rate.
Recalling IPL 2025, Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore secured a top-2 finish with 19 points each. Gujarat Titans, with 18 points, and Mumbai Indians, with 16 points, reached the playoffs. Typically, playoff qualification is not guaranteed if a team scores less than 16 points, and such teams must rely on the results of other matches.
