Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging a High Court decision regarding allegations of disproportionate assets. A bench headed by the Chief Justice of India is expected to hear his petition.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has challenged the Allahabad High Court's order in the Supreme Court regarding allegations of disproportionate assets. The Allahabad High Court had directed the CBI and ED to investigate Rahul Gandhi's allegations of disproportionate assets. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana is expected to hear Rahul Gandhi's petition on August 17th.

On July 20, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court, expressing dissatisfaction over the CBI's response, had directed a senior officer of the agency to personally file a fresh affidavit giving detailed details of the progress made in the investigation into the allegations of disproportionate assets against Rahul.

What did the High Court say?

The High Court had also said that if during the investigation of the allegations, the Enforcement Directorate finds any material or documents indicating any illegality, then it will be free to take further action as per the law.

The High Court had given these instructions while hearing a petition requesting CBI and ED to investigate the allegations of disproportionate assets against the Congress leader.

Who filed the petition?

The order was passed after a nearly two-hour hearing in the judges' chamber on a criminal writ petition filed by Karnataka resident S. Vignesh Shishir.

BJP worker Vignesh had previously filed petitions alleging that the Congress leader held dual citizenship. The court stated that the affidavit filed by the CBI was inconsistent with its earlier order and did not adequately detail the progress of the investigation into the petitioner's complaint regarding Gandhi's assets. It scheduled August 20 for the next hearing.
